Can Chiropractic Care Reverse Heart Disease?
This might initially seem like crazy talk, but he is an expert and makes some excellent points about how chiropractic care can help a person that suffers from cardiovascular disease.
One very important point that he did not cover is that many lifestyle recommendations (diet, exercise, sleep, etc) that a good chiropractor makes can further improve risk factors.
In the article Dr. Wolfson, a cardiologist, talks about 6 ways chiropractic can help heart disease. Summary of Dr. Wolfson’s 6 points below…
1. Chiropractic Care lowers blood pressure.
Studies show a significant improvement in blood pressure with a chiropractic adjustment with a 17 point top number and 10 point bottom number reduction in blood pressure.
He states, “This is better than every pharmaceutical on the market.“
2. Chiropractic Care improves nerve function of the heart through changes in autonomic innervation of the heart that goes to the 2 nodes of the heart that regulate rate and rhythm of the heart.
3. Chiropractic Care decreases blood markers of inflammation to reduce risk of heart attack or cardiovascular event.
4. Chiropractic Care improves heart rate variability.
Heart rate variability is a major health indicator that most people have never heard about. Greater variability correlates with greater health and a longer life.
Dr. Wolfson reports that chiropractic restores HRV to healthy levels.
5. Chiropractic Care decreases chest pain.
Not all chest pain requires massive numbers of expensive diagnostic testing… of course, some chest pain is related to serious heart problems.
HOWEVER – Sometimes all that is required is a simple musculoskeletal exam and a chiropractic adjustment.
It would make sense to do that exam as a very simple screening tool for chest pain.
This one thing, the number of tests that are often done without the often very simple, pre-requisite physical exam really has to make you think about what is happening in health care in the US and why it’s so expensive.
If the problem is a simple musculoskeletal problem that can be identified with an exam, then so many unecessary tests could be eliminated. It does require good competency and time taken in the musculoskeletal physical exam.
Dr. Wolfson reports,
“Costochondritis, rib misalignment, or thoracic vertebrae subluxation are all causes of chest pain and shortness of breath that will respond to chiropractic care.
Billions of dollars would be saved if hospital emergency rooms had a chiropractor on staff. Instead, billions are wasted on CT scans, stress tests, and unnecessary heart catheterizations.
There is a better way and that way is chiropractic.“
6. Chiropractic Care improves lung function.
Chiropractic can improve an individual’s ability to get a deeper breath by improving the mechanics of the chest wall.
Dr. Wolfson states,
“The evidence points to chiropractic care as very effective in patients with asthma and emphysema.
Poor lung function is linked to heart failure.
Common sense would tell us that if breathing is optimized, the heart will repair.”
Of course, every tissue in the body – not just the heart, is dependent on oxygen in order to survive.
Greater ability to inhale and exhale through improving the bio-mechanics of the musculoskeletal system can have a big positive impact on this and is important to health whether you have a heart problem, asthma, COPD, or any other problem… in addition to improving fatigue, work, home, and sports performance.
This is one reason why chiropractors focus on posture. Changes in posture related to injuries and neuro-musculoskeletal problems can reduce your ability to properly inflate your lungs.
This is well researched, certain postural changes reduce your ability to expand your lungs.
