A Common Sense Approach To Solving Chronic Pain

June 10, 2018 by Dr. Marc Hagebusch 1 Comment

Pain is the most common Health Problem facing Americans.

Millions of Americans suffer from ongoing pain. Clearly what we’re commonly doing isn’t working to help. Here’s why and what to do about it to help many get their lives back.

Pain effects more people than diabetes, heart disease and cancer combined!

Millions of Americans suffer from acute (more recent onset) pain.

Many of these people will go on to develop chronic, ongoing pain.

Chronic pain is a leading cause of disability.

Even if you can work with your pain, you suffer because of it.

It causes so much stress and unhappiness.

It limits activities at home, at work, playing with kids / grandkids, sports, and hobbies.

Chronic Pain is longer lasting pain.

Generally pain is considered chronic if it lasts 3 to 6 months or longer depending on who you ask.

The longer pain lasts, the more chronic it is considered.

Many people experience pain every day with common types involving pain of headaches, neck, back, shoulders, hips, extremities and other neuro-musculoskeletal problems.

Chronic Pain affects about 100 million American adults.

Pain causes a lot of suffering. It’s the most common reason we seek health care in the US.

It’s as true in Texarkana as it is anywhere else in Texas, Arkansas, or in the country.

Pain Treatment costs the US up to $635 billion each year in medical treatment and lost productivity.

Pain management treatment is extremely expensive and for far too many, completely ineffective… otherwise the millions suffering would be better and back to enjoying their lives.

Worse…

Common pain treatment is not just ineffective for many.

It also comes with significant risks that create additional health problems for so many that are already suffering.

This isn’t meant to downplay someone’s pain or even suggest that no one ever use a pain reliever.

This information is meant to inform you about treatments (including over the counter medications) so you can make a better decision and not become a statistic.

Most people are really unaware of the risks. We should know more so that we can make an intelligent decision.

Medications can help symptoms and every person is different. Drugs are not good or bad. They are a tool that can help people.

Some tools are better used for certain tasks than others.

It just makes sense to try a different approach for many people because the current most common model of pain treatment isn’t helping a lot of people, is costing an enormous amount of money, and is causing additional suffering in far too many that just want to feel better.

Here’s an ‘alternative’ treatment that actually works!

Opiods are an ever growing concern with report after report coming out in the news and by our government warning against their use.

Did you know that most non-cancer opiods are prescribed because of back pain?

Or that 20% of non-cancer patients presenting with pain are prescribed an opiate?

Those using an opiate for ONE DAY have a 6% chance of being on an opiate one YEAR later.

This increases to 8% risk if used for 8 days and about 30% risk if used for a month!

The majority of drug overdoses in the US are due to opiates.

The vast majority of deaths from prescription drugs every year are due to opiates.

Steroids are commonly given or injected in order to reduce inflammation.

Steroids mimic cortisol in the body.

The effects include…

Reducing the activity immune system which allows it to reduce inflammation (inflammation is a function of the immune system). Of course, our immune system has other functions including protecting us from infections and even from cancer.

Increasing blood sugar.

Normal cortisol levels are released in the morning to help get you ready for activity which requires some blood sugar.

Raising levels higher makes it more dangerous for diabetics and people that have problems with blood sugar or those that are overweight… or don’t want to gain body fat because high cortisol increases body fat particularly in the abdomen and trunk.

These steroids can also lead to losses of bone mass, muscle mass, tendon strength, in addition to the previously mentioned increase in body fat especially when used for prolonged periods or many/multiple times.

Prescription NSAID pain relievers carry significant risks also with Vioxx being a good example.

Causing very significant problems and death for so many Americans before it was pulled from the market.

Other prescription NSAIDs are still used by millions of Americans.

Even common over the counter pain relievers like ibuprofen (and others) increase the risk of stomach damage, kidney problems, heart problems, and more.

The reason that we have so much pain as a society is primarily because what we do (and don’t do) on a daily basis.

It doesn’t match what our bodies are designed to do and what it shouldn’t do.

Others suffer because of a recent or past injury like a Texarkana car accident, a sports injury, or a fall.

The reason why we continue suffering is because the entire paradigm of treating pain and chronic pain treatment is wrong.

Chiropractic Care offers a safe, highly effective way to treat pain and chronic pain that helps people end suffering, often allowing them to reduce or eliminate medications, and get back to enjoying life.

Even more important is that we don’t really treat pain.

Chiropractors are excellent at helping people that have pain, but the truth is that we improve function in the body.

This happens to improve many things, including pain.

Instead of only relying on medications that do not improve function or correct underlying dysfunction and may cause side effects, including death in the case of opiates…

Doesn’t it make more sense to correct the underlying problem?

This is what we do at our Texarkana Clinic.
