Understanding Symptom Management Versus Treatment Of The Problem Causing The Symptoms, Pain and Beyond.

Chiropractic has an underlying philosophy, a framework, that tells us we are meant to be healthy, we develop problems when there are something that interferes with how our bodies are functioning, and that removing that interference will improve our body’s ability to heal.

It’s a very simple concept that is generally true regardless of what that interference is to our health.

In general, chiropractic is most associated with one of our treatment tools, the adjustment and generally spinal adjustments specifically.

There is so much more to chiropractic than the adjustment…

But there is also so much more to the adjustment than you realize because of some of the incredible complexity of our nervous system that is discussed in this post.

In this post though we can barely scratched the surface of what is going on when we improve your body’s function.

This has nothing to do with pain, even though chiropractors are very good at helping pain.

We routinely see people for these types of problems with vertigo, concussions, and postural changes being some of the more common reasons.

Very interestingly the challenge for me was with people who had the complicating factor(s) of an autoimmune processes (unfortunately these are much more common than you realize) and metabolic factors (like diabetes, breathing problems, anemia, and anything that effects fuel delivery and usage in the body/brain) driving their problems which is ultimately why I began studying about diet, nutrition, functional neurology and neurological rehabilitation, and recently functional immunology under Datis Kharrazian who is an immunologist (among dozens of other things) who did his post-doctorate work in immunology at Harvard Medical School.

Surprisingly to many people, people suffering with these things mentioned above, can be helped through chiropractic and lifestyle changes. Not in the cure disease sense (the reality is that there are no “cures” for these chronic diseases only management of symptoms), but people can be helped in the way that matters, just helping them feel and function better.

Most people suffer with chronic diseases that interfere with every part of their lives and robs them of their true potential.

They suffer by often not being able to do their favorite activities, play with their kids or grandkids, perform their best at home or work, have poor energy, mood problems, and so many other challenges.

Most people can dramatically improve their function and how they feel, even if they have an incurable, chronic disease… they can improve how well they’re able to function. Yet they tend to be stuck in the way of thinking which is take a medication for every symptom without ever taking the time to correct what is causing the symptom.

For example, Chiropractic care has been shown to help us better learn new movements.

I’ve previously discussed research about chiropractic reducing the risk of falling.

Risk of falling, learning new movements for sports or music, reading and writing, clumsiness (tripping, stubbing your toe, hitting your elbow,…), and more. These are not pain relieving benefits, there’s more going one.

But let’s look at pain and chronic pain. Most people suffering day after day are only taking medications and getting injections.

The treatment of people with pain and chronic pain.

Symptom management versus treating the cause of the pain.

People suffering in pain end up taking various pain relievers, muscle relaxers (a central nervous system depressant), steroids (and steroid injections both of which will dramatically raise blood sugar to dangerous levels) over time causing so many other health problems while the musculoskeletal problem that is causing the pain continues to be damaged and degenerate leading to other problems too.

It’s not that a medication may not be helpful.

The problem is that a medication should be used to help the symptoms while the problem is improved through physical care. It’s not an either or situation.

It’s also the wrong approach to just take medications to reduce symptoms while damage continues to occur in the musculoskeletal problem AND in the other areas, including organs (liver, stomach, kidneys, heart, …), that are damaged by continuing to take the medication over time.

This is dangerous. There’s real risk that increases over time.

Also without addressing what is causing the problem, it leads to much greater problems and for so many it dramatically changes their lives in a very bad way.

“Everyone wants to go to Heaven, but no one wants to die.”

There’s an old Steven Seagal movie, “Marked For Death.”

What can I say, I’m a lifelong martial artist so I’ve watched all kinds of martial arts movies. The movie joined the rest of Seagal’s movies in making Aikido look both cool and effective.

In the real world let’s just say for the majority of people it doesn’t really do either. *Shout out to the movie Game Changers which did the same thing by somehow convincing people that vegan diets are healthier and better for athletic performance!

Anyway “Marked For Death” is a movie and that’s what movies do… create a certain false narrative and provide entertainment. outside of reality.

In the movie, Seagal’s antagonist is a group of violent Jamaican gang members. At one point in the movie, the Jamaican gang leader brandishing a sword says to Seagal,

“Everybody wants to go to heaven, but nobody wants to die.”

In this case likely referring back to an old Peter Tosh reggae song. I’m not sure who came up with it before him, but he wasn’t the originator. Earlier songwriters and bands used the same phrase including Tommy Dorsey and some older jazz bands.

To the point.

The quote taken as a concept means that everybody wants something.

They want to accomplish some major goal yet they do not want to do what is absolutely required to accomplish it often because it’s difficult.

Many times, we look for short cuts or some easy way to circumvent what it really takes. This means you don’t ever get there. You don’t accomplish the goal that could really make a huge difference in your life.

This goal could be finally losing weight and keeping it off, some major fitness goal, some health goal like taking care of what is causing a symptom, improving your finances, or anything else that is meaningful to you.

Too often we look for some easier way to make things better.

Putting this into the context of health…

We might take medications instead of handling the cause of a health problem. This could be a little less serious problem like moderate headaches, back pain (or other area), stomach problems, or more serious problems ranging from diabetes to heart problems, neurological problems, autoimmunity, and others.

In EVERY case, no matter what the health problem there are things that you should do to improve the problem.

It’s very dangerous to think you can just take a medication(s) and think everything is cool. It’s not.

The only way to improve your health or anything else is to be proactive and to realize it’s up to you to improve things regardless of current circumstances.

We want to feel better and to do all the things we used to do yet too often we don’t commit to doing whatever it takes to get there.
